Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR)
The Challenge
Mining is a cyclical industry. After the recession of 2008-2009 many mines closed across Canada. Companies needed help to professionally and humanely downsize their labour forces.
The Solution
Ingenia developed a comprehensive, research-based program to assist with adjustment. We researched companies that had transitioned laid-off workers from outside the mining industry into their firm. We examined provincial adjustment programs and post-secondary training programs designed to assist transitioning workers. We also interviewed workers from across Canada to ascertain effective practices.
Ingenia then redesigned a mining industry adjustment program last used in the 1990s. We re wrote five guides on adjustment. We developed a workshop for employees and managers and facilitated a pilot transition training program at the Kemess Mine near Smithers British Columbia.
The Result
MiHR now has an industry driven and tested training program to assist companies with transition and workforce adjustment issues.
